NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--U.S. stock futures pointed to a higher open Monday even though Commerce Department data showed that consumer spending cooled off at the start of 2011.

Following the Dow Jones Industrial Average's biggest weekly drop since August, Dow futures rose 52 points to 12162, while Standard & Poor's 500-stock futures rose 6 points to 1325 and Nasdaq 100 futures gained 11 points to 2357. Prior to the data, Dow futures had been up 57 points, while S&P 500 futures rose 7 points and Nasdaq futures had gained 12 points. Changes in futures do not always accurately predict stock moves after the opening bell.

The morning's premarket gains follow a 2.1% slump in the blue-chip Dow index last week, driven by oil supply worries amid unrest in Libya. It was the Dow's biggest weekly point drop since the week ended Aug. 13, 2010.

Consumer spending increased by 0.2% in January, less than in December, the Commerce Department reported Monday. The saving rate rose in January, to 5.8% from 5.4% the month before, a sign of caution among consumers. The slowdown in spending came even though personal income rose by 1.0%, the largest gain since May 2009 as the federal government extended income tax cuts to fatten Americans' paychecks and stimulate spending.

Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires had estimated spending would climb by 0.4% and incomes by 0.4% in January. Income in December grew an unrevised 0.4%. Spending rose 0.5%, revised down from a previously estimated 0.7% increase.

Separately, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis President James Bullard Monday said the central bank is "determined" to get monetary policy back to normal, and that policymakers could end the second round of quantitative easing a "little shy" of their full plan.

Asked about the impact of unrest in the Middle East and rising oil prices, Bullard suggested that the rise in oil hasn't lasted long enough to provide a shock to the economy. Should concerns about oil supplies from the region wane in the next few weeks, "this will go away," he said.

Crude oil futures eased after last week's surge on worries over supply disruptions from Libya. Gold futures gained slightly at $1,410.10 an ounce.

The euro added 0.7% to $1.3843 from $1.3753 late Friday.
