DJ BEFORE THE BELL: US Stock Futures Slightly Mixed In Cautious Trade

U.S. stock futures edged slightly mixed Monday, as investors opted for caution ahead of earnings from fast-food giant McDonald's Corp. and other major firms.

Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1 points to 11823 and S&P 500 futures fell 0.4 point to 1279.30. Nasdaq 100 futures were little changed at fell 1.75 points to 2267.25.

On Friday, the blue-chip Dow index ended up 0.4%. It gained 0.7% last week, finishing higher for the eighth week in a row.

No major economic data are scheduled for release Monday, so the spotlight will fall on a string of high-profile earnings reports.

"With the lack of economic data, a lot of trading will be around technicals today," said Christian Tegllund Blaabjerg, chief equity strategist at Saxo Bank.

A break below the 10-day moving average for the S&P 500 index could trigger profit taking, he said.

"In order for this [market] trend to keep going higher, we need some solid earnings," Blaabjerg added.

Before the opening bell, McDonald's Corp. (MCD) is projected to post fourth-quarter earnings of $1.16 a share on revenue of $6.21 billion, according to the consensus estimate compiled by FactSet Research.

Oilfield-services group Halliburton Co. (HAL) reported sharp increases in fourth-quarter profit and revenue from the year-earlier period. Shares of Halliburton gained 1% in premarket trading.

Transportation firm CSX Corp. (CSX) is also due to report quarterly results Monday morning.

After the market closes, credit-card firm American Express Co. (AXP) and semiconductor group Texas Instruments Inc. (TXN) will release earnings.

In premarket trading, U.S.-listed shares of Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. (PHG) slumped 6.5% after the Dutch electronics group reported quarterly profit that fell below market expectations.

Meanwhile, Rock Tenn Co. (RKT) said it will buy packaging firm Smurfit Stone Container Corp. (SSCC) in a deal worth $35 a share, or around $3.5 billion.

Pharmaceutical major Sanofi-Aventis SA (SNY) said it has extended its offer for Genzyme Corp. (GENZ) until Feb. 15. All other terms and conditions of the $69-a-share offer remain unchanged.

Department-store operator J.C. Penney Co. (JCP) announced restructuring measures that include closing several stores.

In Asia overnight, Japan's Nikkei Stock Average gained 0.7%, while China's Shanghai Composite index slipped 0.7% as concerns about further policy tightening continued to weigh on the market.

European equities were mostly lower, with the Stoxx Europe 600 index falling 0.2% in intraday trading.

In the currency markets, the greenback strengthened against its major rivals, with the dollar index gaining 0.4% to 78.463.

The euro slipped 0.5% to $1.3557, while the dollar gained 0.4% against the Japanese currency to 82.86 yen.

Crude-oil futures fell 78 cents to $88.32 a barrel in electronic trading on Globex. Gold futures, meanwhile, gained $5.20 to $1,346.20 an ounce.
